Project ADAM.Illinois

Midwest Heart Foundation/Project ADAM. Illinois is an affiliate of Project ADAM® a not-for-profit program of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Project ADAM® is a sudden cardiac death prevention program created and named in memory of Adam Lemel, a 17 year old high school student who collapsed and died while playing basketball.

The mission is to serve children and adolescents through education and deployment of life saving programs that help prevent sudden cardiac arrest.

Schools and other areas where large groups of children and adolescents gather are the targeted geography.

Project ADAM® provides a pediatric cardiac advisory committee to implement a unique program for sharing the most current data and information on sudden cardiac arrest incidents. This ultimately will lead to medical research that will prevent sudden cardiac arrest.

Startling facts about sudden cardiac arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, claiming about 1,000 people a day.

It is estimated that sudden cardiac arrest affects more than 7000 children annually.

The average survival rate of someone who collapses from sudden cardiac arrest is 6%.

By administering CPR and defibrillation within 5 minutes of collapse, the survival rate increases to 30-50%.
